Malibu resident and Our Lady of Malibu School 8th grade student Rachel DeAngelis was recently crowned as the first Jr. Miss West Coast at the Miss West Coast pageant held on Saturday, July 29, at the Morgan-Wixson Theatre in Santa Monica. Rachel graciously accepted 2 other awards that evening – community service and best evening gown walk. She also received perfect scores for introduction and on stage question.
When asked, “Why do you want to be Jr. Miss West Coast?” Rachel replied, “At school I am an honor student, head cheerleader, on the student council, and blessed to receive the outstanding citizenship and community service awards. If I was to be chosen Jr. Miss West Coast, I would not only like to continue being a good role model at my school, but inspire others across California to always to be their best.”
When asked what her favorite subjects were, Rachel replied, “I really like science and math. My science teacher, Ms. Retts, makes it super fun as she thinks out-of-the-box. For example, she made a crime scene and we had to apply science to figure it out. My math teacher, Ms. Savannah Armour, has us apply real things in life to Math. I think my favorite electives are robotics with Mr. Glen Sunyich and speech with Mr. Les Hardie. Currently, my Robotics team is 39th in the World and in California. Public speaking is also very important as it gives me the confidence to go out into the community and make a difference in California.”
