Polo Fundraiser Promises Day of Elegance and Taste
Safety Harbor Kids (SHK) is a 501c3 established for the purpose of enriching the lives of orphans and homeless children through education in the areas of College, Career, Music and the Arts. Through community and corporate donations and sponsorships, SHK is able to bring academic tutoring, career development, music and the arts education and mentorships to disadvantaged children in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.
On Saturday, September 12th the 8th Annual Safety Harbor Kids Polo Classic will be held on the historic polo grounds at Will Rogers State Park. The venue offers breathtaking views from the mountains to the sea, and has been the filming location of movies including Star Trek IV (William Shatner, Nichelle Nichols, 1986) and Pretty Woman (Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, 1990). Hollywood royalty including Clark Gable, Joan Crawford and Walt Disney also frequented the polo estate formerly owned by 1930’s entertainer Will Rogers. Special guest Nichelle Nichols is the Honorary Chair of this beautiful event to support Safety Harbor Kids.
The event will include a special performance by Master of Ceremonies and Defender of the British Empire, Peter Asher, whose musical accomplishments are matched by few. The event will begin with chamber music by members of the LA Philharmonic as guests, dressed in white, enjoy wine tasting and cocktails followed by appetizers provided by The Berry Man and Kerrygold, and lunch by Monrose Catering. High tea with Charles & Co Tea and drinks by Long Shot coffee will follow as guests enjoy a special musical performance, card club and half time entertainment by Dream World Cirque.
Guests will dine and enjoy refreshments field side while experiencing the exhilaration of the horses thundering by during the polo match. At half time the players rest and the acrobats take the field with amazing displays of balance, flexibility and physical strength. “It is difficult to remember what was most fun last year,” says Patricia Tackett, wife of rock star Fred Tackett of Little Feat. “The Polo match and the acrobats at half time were absolutely mesmerizing,” she adds. Half time will also include the traditional Polo divot stomp where guests take the field and replace the tufts of grass kicked up by the horses.
Polo is played between two teams of four mounted riders on a field that measures 300 by 160 yards (as big as nine football fields), with goal posts at either end. The object is to move a ball downfield and through the goal in six periods of play known as “chukkas” or “chukkers.” Each chukka is seven minutes long. There are no time-outs except for injuries, penalties, or unsafe situations. And no replacement of players is allowed except for injuries.
The event will include a private VIP lounge, and guests may purchase tables and private cabanas for this annual fundraiser sponsored by Tesla, Vintage Grocers, Safety Harbor Capital, StarPower, and DAMA Tequila. The event is also supported by BritWeek and the British American Business Council, with both groups supporting the cause to raise funds for education programs for children with no families.
